Sad memories surface in new Ipswich flood objects exhibition

TRUE TREASURES: Mick Thornes and
his son Eric with possessions that
were salvaged from the flood.

LIKE many of the Ipswich families traumatised by the January 2011 floods, Mick and Anita Thornes found it helped to talk about what they went through.

Artist Deb Mostert was a good listener, collecting stories that will be told in an exhibition due to open this Saturday at the Ipswich Art Gallery .

Recovery: The Flood Objects Project comprises 11 paintings of treasured items salvaged from the floods by stricken families.

"Their stories of loss and redemption are touching and often heartbreaking," Ms Mostert said.

The Thornes family lives at North Booval.

"We were lucky - we didn't lose a lot compared to other people," Mr Thornes said.

"It's hard to believe it's two years (since the flood).

"It's like a nightmare. You'll go looking for something but you can't find it."
