2011 flood failed to sink local business

DESPITE the heavy odds, one flood-damaged business in Brisbane's industrial heartland of Rocklea has staged a successful two-year fightback.

About 900 properties in the Rocklea area were swamped by up to 4m of floodwater in 2011, including PJs Custom Spraypainting.

Owner Steven Lemon ran his business off a generator for nine months post-flood and went on to survive a second blow when his insurer rejected his damage claim.
UNDER BUT NOT OUT: PJs Custom Spraypainting
sustained heavy damage in the 2011 flood.

He's had little time for finger-pointing but still hopes the authorities will act to prevent another flood.

"I know the council did quite a lot cleaning drains and stuff like that," he said. "They probably need to dredge the Oxley (Creek) a bit."

Throughout it all, Mr Lemon kept all 15 of his staff and has since added another five to the payroll.

"We've come a long way since then," he said. "I just hope they do something about the flooding for the future more than anything."
