THIS Friday marks two years since many of the suburbs in the south-west and Ipswich were flooded.
Residents and businesses alike experienced heart break and huge financial costs, as their possessions and livelihoods were inundated by the brown water.
Across Brisbane 20,000 homes were hit by the flood waters, with Graceville and Goodna among the worst suburbs hit.
But while homes and businesses were out of action, in many ways the south-west was lucky, as lives were spared.
The 2011 floods killed 35 people in Queensland, with a further nine people still missing. Many of those killed came from the Lockyer Valley, an area devastated by flash flooding.
Two years on and it is hard to tell just how bad it was in some of our suburbs.
The people and community have rallied and done an amazing job in getting families and businesses back on track.
There were some amazing stories to come out of the floods in our local area.
One that has stayed with me is the story of a couple at Oxley. The wife was heavily pregnant with their second child, and they decided to evacuate early.
They didn't think the water would reach the house, but as it became clear it would their neighbours got into the house and managed to move nearly all of their possessions to safety.
What great neighbours.
I hope in 2013 we have some equally amazing stories to tell, and that the community continues to help one another when needed.
