Acting Queensland Premier Jeff Seeney |
ACTING Premier Jeff Seeney has defended his Government's implementation of the flood inquiry's recommendations.
"The commission of inquiry made 177 separate recommendations of which 123 related to the State Government," Mr Seeney said.
He said 47 had been implemented with the remainder in train.
Mr Seeney said many of the recommendations still to be implemented involved "extensive bodies of work".
"The commission itself recommended they be done over the long term," he said.
Mr Seeney said there five implementation committees working to address the recommendations.
"Following the change of government we certainly put in place a process to ensure that all of those recommendations were addressed and addressed as quickly as was possible," he said.
Mr Seeney said the Government was also working on the dam manual with short-term work completed before the wet season
"The long-term amendment of the dam operation manual depends on a whole range of hydrological work...flood plain studies and catchment studies which are extensive bodies of work which take quite a number of years to complete.
During January 2011, the Brisbane River flooded South Bank Parklands and the CBD. This view from South Bank looks towards the city as the waters rise.
"It's not something that could possibly be completed in the six months since the commission made its report."
Mr Seeney said the Government's focus had also been on reconstruction effort.
"Some $12 billion worth of reconstruction work has been identified of which about $6.5 billion has been completed and another $4.5 billion is under way as we speak."
