DAM levels in Queensland won't be reduced ahead of the coming wet season.
The weather bureau says widespread floods probably won't occur because the La Nina weather pattern that brought heavy downpours in recent years has finally broken up.
As a result, Queensland Premier Campbell Newman says Brisbane's main water supply, Wivenhoe Dam, won't have its level reduced.
"At this stage there will be no draw down to 75 per cent because they're not forecasting large rain events or consistent rain events," Mr Newman told reporters on Monday.
That decision will be reviewed regularly throughout the season.
Bureau of Meteorology Queensland director Rob Webb says periods of severe weather can still be expected this summer, with an increased risk of heatwaves.
The fire risk also remains high, particularly in the southern inland areas, and tropical cyclones are expected to form although not all will make landfall.
"So many Queenslanders have experienced so much heartbreak at the hands of Mother Nature in recent years," Mr Newman said.
"I implore people to go and make sure insurance policies are up to date and paid, and that they have courage."
