Deb Mostert brings together paintings and stories to stage an exhibition of objects salvaged from the 2011 floods. |
PRECIOUS objects salvaged after the January 2011 floods are the focus of a new exhibition to be staged by Ipswich artist Deb Mostert on the second anniversary of the disaster.
Teaming her paintings with stories told by the flood victims, Ms Mostert hopes to initiate an element of healing into the exhibition.
"My community was entirely under water," she said.
"These are personal connections I have with people. It's the stories behind the objects.
"Their stories of loss and redemption are touching and often heartbreaking."
Salvaged items have come in from Chelmer, Oxley, Pullenvale, Goodna and Karalee.
"I am painting them as precious artefacts, on a plinth or in a niche or the lone item on an empty shelf, alluding to the things lost that are no more," Ms Mostert said.
"Still life drawing workshops will be held in conjunction with all exhibitions and may hopefully aid the healing process as stories can be swapped and shared."
Having no success through the usual funding bodies, Ms Mostert is recruiting "people power" to stage her exhibition.
"I am crowd-funding on Pozible to help offset the material costs of having an exhibition in the first instance at Ipswich Art Gallery," she said.
