Flood victims urged to continue the fight

Media Release - Greater Goodna Flood Group

Flood victims have been urged to maintain their fight for compensation after last year's Brisbane and Ipswich floods.

This follows the release yesterday of a report commissioned by the state government into the flood.

The report by United States Army Engineers commended Local engineers for their management of the Wivenhoe Dam in January 2011.

Ipswich Councillor Paul Tully - one of Goodna's 600 flood victims - described the report as "self-serving".

"The report failed to examine the key findings of the Floods Commission that the Wivenhoe Dam releases had been mismanaged in the days leading up to the flood.

"This is a half-baked report which does nothing to exonerate Seqwater over its failure to comply with the dam operating manual during the flood crisis.

"I am urging flood victims to sign up for the proposed class action as this is the only way justice will be done.

"This matter is now likely to end up in the Queensland Supreme Court where a judge will decide the competing claims and arguments.

"My advice to flood victims is to not lose hope and to hang in there for the long haul.

"This is only round one.

"This case could drag on for years in the courts but I predict justice will finally prevail for flood victims," Cr Tully said.

Maurice Blackburn Lawyers are set to announce in the next few weeks whether or not they will instigate a class action on behalf of almost 5000 flood victims.
