El Nino raises a dam strategy rethink for Brisbane

BRISBANE'S brimming dams are set to be held at near capacity through Queensland's impending wet season, reversing an order to lower them to 75 per cent as a safeguard against flooding that devastated the capital early last year.

Premier Campbell Newman said yesterday that Bureau of Meteorology forecasts of a dry, hot summer -- under the influence of an expected borderline El Nino weather pattern -- made it likely Brisbane's principal "flood shield" of Wivenhoe dam would not be drained, even though it is 99 per cent full.
